My prayer of late is more like this: Father , I pray that I will wake before I die. Wake me from any lethargy. Wake me from any monotony. Wake me from a life of mediocrity. Wake me from the lie that there’s nothing I can significantly contribute to this life or to the lives of others. Wake me up to what really matters. – Kurt W. Bubna

Another way to describe the dilemma for religious faith is that pluralism creates social conditions in which God is no longer an inevitability. While it is possible to believe in God, one has to work much harder at it because the framework of belief is no longer present to sustain it. The presumption of God and of his active presence in the world cannot be easily sustained because the most important symbols of social, economic, political, and aesthetic life no longer point to him. God is simply less obvious than he once was, and for most no longer obvious at all – quite the opposite. – James Davison Hunter

I would never have chosen that life for myself, I know. But God knew what he was doing. And everything I went through turned out to make songs like we write that touch people that have to go through the same kind of things. And if I hadn’t gone through what I went through I wouldn’t be right here right now. And I’m just talking about how God makes good out of bad, usually all the time, he can always do that. It’s just that God works everything together for the good of those who love him. And I’m glad I’ve gone through what I did. – Lacey Sturm

Why is it that we are so busy with the future? It is not our province; and is there not a criminal interference with Him to whom it belongs, in our feverish, anxious attempts to dispose of it, and in filling it up with shadows of good and evil shaped by our own wild imaginations? To do God’s will as fast as it is made known to us, to inquire hourly–I had almost said each moment–what He requires of us, and to leave ourselves, our friends, and every interest at His control, with a cheerful trust that the path which He marks out leads to our perfection and to Himself,–this is at once our duty and happiness; and why will we not walk in the plain, simple way? – William Ellery Channing

Like Batman, all of us hide behind our masks and use them to help define ourselves for others. We all have secret identities of a sort, hidden behind our smiling social-networking profiles or our happy church faces. They’re not lies, really. They’re just not the whole truth, because we know that most of the people we encounter day-to-day couldn’t handle the truth (or perhaps we couldn’t handle giving it to them). – Paul Asay

It’s common in the middle of a drought . . . to forget that rain is the norm. Or in the middle of a flood to forget that floods rarely happen. Or when bad news comes from the doctor to forget that, for most of us, this comes after many years of relatively good health. – Mark Mittelberg

I find that all my thoughts circle around God like the planets around the sun, and are as irresistibly attracted by Him. I would feel it to be the grossest sin if I were to oppose any resistance to this force. – C. G. Jung’
